In-Person Absentee Voting – With an Excuse
If you live in Fayette County and didn’t ask for a mail-in ballot, you may vote early in person if you have a qualifying reason. See reasons below.

Fayette County Clerk’s Office 162 E Main Street, Lexington 🕗 Open: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
📅 When You Can Vote Early:
You can vote early (with an excuse) during the 6 business days before the Thursday before Election Day.
✅ Who Can Vote In-Person Absentee?
You can vote early if one of these applies to you:
- You’re in the military or live overseas and will be out of the county on Election Day and Early Voting days.
- You or your spouse has surgery planned that requires a hospital stay during voting days.
- You live outside Kentucky temporarily but you are still a resident of Kentucky who will be out of the county during voting days.
- You’re a military member stuck on base during voting days.
- You’re in your third trimester of pregnancy.
- You’re elderly, sick, or disabled and can’t go vote in person (but haven’t been declared mentally disabled by a court).
- You’re a student living outside Fayette County and won’t be home during voting days.
- Your job and travel time won’t allow you to vote during voting hours.
- You’re an election officer or official working in the election.
- You’ll be out of the county for all of Early Voting and Election Day.
- You’re a caregiver who drives a voter to the county clerk’s office to cast an in-person absentee ballot.
