Important Information regarding candidate filing deadlines

Wednesday, November 5, 2025, is the earliest date for the affixing of signatures on candidate filing forms for an office on the ballot in 2026.  The candidate filing deadline: last day to file nomination papers for candidates who must run in primary to file a statement of candidacy form with the same office at which nomination papers are filed is Friday, January 9, 2026 at 4:00 pm.

Procedures for qualifying and running for office are established by the Kentucky Constitution and the Kentucky Revised Statutes. For information on candidate filing procedures, qualifications for each office and to print filing forms, you may visit the Kentucky Secretary of State.  All filing forms are also available in the Elections Department of the Fayette County Clerk’s Office, 162 East Main Street, Room 202, Lexington, KY 40507

Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Offices:  Procedures for running for Mayor, Council At-Large, or District Council are established by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Charter.  For filing forms click here or visit the Fayette County Clerk’s Office.

Candidates wishing to start their campaign before they are allowed to officially file for office with the Secretary of State or County Clerk may file a “Letter of Intent” with the Registry of Election Finance in Frankfort. For more information, contact the Registry of Election Finance at 502-573-2226.
