Insurance Requirements

  1. You must have Commonwealth of Kentucky insurance.
    Out-of-state insurance is not accepted (except for active-duty military*).
  2. The vehicle owner or lessee must be listed on the insurance policy.
  3. New Kentucky residents must get Commonwealth of Kentucky insurance before registering their vehicle.
  4. If you’re buying a vehicle, you must get Commonwealth of Kentucky liability insurance in your name before titling and registering it.
  5. The VIN and insured name on your insurance must match what’s on the title.
  6. Insurance binders must state coverage is bound and is accepted for up to 30 days.
  7. Your insurance must include the 5-digit NAIC number.
  8. Policy type must be listed as “PL” (personal) or “CL” (commercial).
  9. The insurance effective date must be within 45 days of your transaction date.

* Military personnel can use out-of-state insurance, but must provide a copy of their military ID.

Uninsured Notice

To help reduce uninsured drivers on Kentucky roads, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has contacted some vehicle owners about their auto insurance.

If you received an uninsured notice:

  • Ask your insurance company to fax proof of insurance on their official letterhead.
  • The letter must be dated today and say it is “in reference to uninsured notice.

You should get a receipt from our office within a few days.
If you don’t receive a receipt, please contact us for next steps.
